Academic Writing and Presentation Skills Course for Visiting Scholars

Course Schedule: This course is a 15-week course, which takes place twice a year (August to December or January to May). Classes meet twice a week for 80 minutes. Regular attendance through the entire course is expected.

Course Content: The first half of the course teaches students to identify the conventions of academic writing in their own discipline. Students will set individualized goals and design their own assignments, often working on writing their own journal articles and conference papers for publications. The second half of the course is focused on developing presentation skills to prepare students for U.S. professional conferences. Students will practice presenting their own research and will participate in a mock conference at the end of the semester.

Eligibility: In order to participate in this course, a student must be a UIUC visiting scholar with a UIN and NetID. UIUC international postdocs, faculty, and staff should contact Cassandra Rosado ( for alternative enrollment options. Family members of visiting scholars do not qualify for this course and should seek English learning support in the local community.

Sign-up Process: To begin the student registration process, please complete the form below. Based on eligibility and availability, students will be approved by the course coordinator. Once approved, students will receive an email notification and then will be able to pay for the course with a credit card.

Course Cost: This 15-week course costs $749 per student. This cost covers teaching, administrative, and supply costs for the Department of Linguistics, who hosts this course.
