As part of our service to ESL students here at UIUC, we keep a list of approved tutors: people with degrees and/or extensive experience working with ESL learners. The first link below leads to a list of tutors specifically approved for those seeking to pass the English Proficiency Interview (EPI). This test is for those who wish to be TAs at Illinois. The second, a listserv for tutors, is useful for ESL students looking for general ESL tutors or editors.
General ESL tutor listserv: If you are looking for an approved tutor or editor, please email your request to firstname.lastname@example.org. All requests should include the following:
1. Your contact information
2. Your current status/level (Example: first-semester graduate student or tutor needed for 11 year-old daughter)
3. A brief explanation of what your ESL needs are (example: research writing tutor, TOEFL tutor, conversation skills, editing a publication, etc.)
The ESL Writing Program will then review your request and, if approved, redirect it to a list of approved ESL tutors who can respond to your request. Your request will be sent to all approved tutors, so you might receive multiple responses. Interested students may then form service agreements with a tutor independently of UIUC. Any pay associated with these services is not affiliated with UIUC.
Prospective Tutors: If you wish to be added to the tutors list and offer your services to students, please contact email@example.com. You will be asked to fill out an application and provide evidence of your qualifications as an ESL tutor.
A note for ESL instructors on the tutors lists: You may not tutor a student in the same semester that they are in your class. It poses a conflict of interest. You may however refer interested students to the list.
The Writers Workshop, part of the Center for Writing Studies, provides free writing assistance for University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines and at all stages of the writing process. Discuss your writing with consultants who are experienced writers and teachers of writing. Please see their webpage for more information.
